Making a cheap and easy prop sword for a low budget fantasy short film

To keep our independent film as full of practical effects as possible, I had to learn how to make a prop sword! This had some of the most challenges of all of my DIY projects, but experimenting and figuring it out as I went made it a perfect DIY craft for beginners. Crafting a fantasy sword, and all of the other handmade costumes and props, made me really respect everyone who does cosplay prop making - I watched a LOT of cosplaying how-to videos to figure out how to make cheap movie props.
In saying that, I just know I did not make this easy for myself. Is there a better way to make a custom sword? If you’re an arts and crafts lover like myself and know your way around affordable DIY projects, please please let me know how you would have tackled this! I would love to know any crafting tips or filmmaking tips for future fantasy films.
