The cold case of Zhang Zhan. A Chinese citizen journalist who was the first to face trail for reporting on the coronavirus response. She has been jailed for her coverage of the initial Covid-19 response on Wuhan and is now facing four to five years in prison. She was found guilty of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” She traveled to Wuhan and decided to document what was really going on in the streets and hospitals by livestreaming and writing essays. Her reports were widely being shared on different social media platforms. She vowed to continue spreading the truth despite the threats against her by authorities. When she was formally charged a day after going missing, the indictment sheet alleges she was spreading false information through social media and accepting interviews through foreign media outlets. In protest to her arrest, Zhang is on a hunger strike and her health is deteriorating and her family and lawyers are concerned for her well-being. Her sentencing is being used to set an example to other dissidents who dare try to expose what happened in Wuhan. This isn’t just about the fate of Zhang Zhan but other detained citizens who reported on the virus.
