Mark Zuckerberg is scheduled to testify in a major California mass tort case alleging that social media platforms intentionally designed addictive algorithms that harmed children’s mental health.
This litigation has been building for years. Snapchat and TikTok have already reached settlements. Meta (Facebook/Instagram) and YouTube remain as defendants, and the case is now entering the trial phase, beginning with jury selection.
These lawsuits allege that excessive social media use contributed to anxiety, depression, self-harm, and the need for professional mental health treatment among minors.
Importantly, the case going to trial does not mean it is too late to come forward. As media coverage increases, more families are learning they may still qualify to participate.
General qualification factors may include:
Social media use between ages 8–18
More than 3 hours per day on the platforms
Currently under 26 years old
Sought professional mental health treatment
