The Moon controls Earth’s tides mainly through gravity. Here’s a simple, clear explanation:
🌙 How the Moon Causes Tides on Earth
1. Moon’s gravity pulls on Earth’s water
The side of Earth facing the Moon feels a stronger pull.
This causes the water to bulge outward → high tide.
2. Opposite side also gets a high tide
On the side away from the Moon, gravity is slightly weaker.
Water lags behind, forming another bulge → high tide.
3. Two high tides & two low tides every day
As Earth rotates, different areas pass through these bulges.
Places moving into the bulge get high tide, and moving out get low tide.
🌍 Sun also helps, but Moon is stronger
The Sun’s gravity also affects tides, but the Moon is closer, so its effect is much stronger.
🌊 Types of tides
Spring tides: Strongest tides when Sun, Moon, and Earth are in a straight line (Full Moon & New Moon).
Neap tides: Weakest tides when Sun and Moon form a 90° angle (First & Last Quarter Moon).
If you want, I can also give a diagram-style explanation.
