Coming out to Korean Christian Parents

Описание: If you know anything about Korean parents, you know how scary and strict they can be. Even a simple slip up at school or a lingering side eye at the dinner table can cause a hailstorm of retribution that can make even the toughest among us quiver in fear. So you can imagine how terrified I was when a random stranger outed me to my parents, back when I was a teenager. And for good reason.

After my parents found out that I was gay, my rather simple and sheltered life completely blew up in my face and I was forced to survive on my own. It's a scenario that I would never wish upon anyone, but it's a scary reality that a lot of gay asian kids face. So it's no surprise that so many of us decide to keep our sexuality a secret and stay in the closet, even far into adulthood.

I can't say that coming out is necessarily the answer for everyone. Asians have a particularly hard time finding the justification for coming out because we often put our family's needs above our own. Dishonoring one's parents is a cardinal sin, so the prospect of disappointing them and putting them through such pain and embarrassment just seems untenable and far too risky. The idea of getting disowned and bringing shame to our parents, especially in light of all they have done for us convinces many gay asians to stay in the closet. Because we somehow grow convinced that a life of secrecy and lies is somehow better. I'm not here to preach or to convince you otherwise. I do, however, want to offer you an alternative and show you that your life can be so much happier and greater than what you imagine today.


My purpose for this channel is share my story as a proud gay Asian American husband and father of two amazing boys. I hope to specifically reach out to gay asian men who struggle with coming out, and also more broadly to anyone who feels unloved because they fear they will never be accepted for living their truth and for being who they really are. In sharing my stories of coming out, dating, marriage, fatherhood and all the ups and downs that go on in my daily life, I hope to be the gay asian male role model I never had growing up.

I consider myself to be blessed and exceptionally lucky, because my life really could have gone in a different direction had I allowed doubts and shame take over. My struggle with finding my own identity as an asian man in a society that largely glosses over us and deems us invisible is one that many of you can relate to. So I hope to create a page where through kinship, people can collectively heal and work on loving themselves.
