Hi everyone. Aiden here with Etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at and later be showing you how to install this RetraxPRO XR hard tonneau cover on our 2016 Toyota Tundra. Now, when it comes to hard tonneau covers, you've got a couple of different styles. You've got the roll up and the trifold that'll sit on top of the bed rails, but this one is going to be a canister style and really all that means is it'll roll up to a canister at the front of your bed, meaning that nothing blocks the back window of your tundra. Now, personally, I'm a fan of this style.
I think it's nice because the finished look is pretty clean. The one downside is that it does take up some space in the bed and for our particular Tundra today, having a shorter bed, that could be a real issue for some people. But if you're not using your bed for a ton of hauling, then maybe that's not as much of a concern for you. But for me personally, I think it's something I could overlook in this case, just because it does give you a very clean look when it's closed and when it's open. And one of the big benefits to a hardcover as opposed to a soft cover is the security that you get with it.
This one's constructed of a series of interlocking aluminum slats, which means no one's gonna be able to cut through it like they would with the soft cover. And while nothing is thief proof, this is certainly going to do the best job possible at keeping the contents of your bed locked up. When paired with the locking tailgate and the lock on the release latch here, you're gonna need a key somewhere to get into it. And that release lever is actually what makes this cover unique. Most other tonneau covers are gonna have some sort of release mechanism underneath the cover, which means if you want to open it, you have to open your tailgate.
With this one being on the outside, you can leave the tailgate closed. If you need to throw something in the back real quick and then just close it when you're done, you can. And whenever you close that lever, it'll lock the cover in place. And one of the other things that makes this particular cover really unique is the T tracks. Now Retrax makes versions of this cover with and without it.
And if you opt for the one like this that has it, it can be used with certain adapters to add crossbars over the bed of your truck or even full ladder racks. That can be really helpful for carrying larger items, maybe like a kayak or something, and still have the function of a tonneau cover. Now because of that T track, the side rails are gonna be a little bit bulkier, just because you need some mass there to attach those things, but it's only gonna sit up about an inch off the bed rail. So all things considered, it's not bad. If that is a concern to you though and you don't plan on using any of those other accessories, then just get the version of this cover that doesn't have those T track side rails. This cover does clamp onto the deck rail system that's present on our tundra today. If your tundra doesn't have that, again, there's a version of this cover that doesn't require that, but if you've got the deck rails, then this is the one you need because the clamps will attach directly in there. Now if you did have tie downs or anchor points that slid into this track, that's okay. They'd still be totally functional. You'll just have to remove them temporarily for the install process, but you can add them back in once you're done. Our truck didn't have those, so it wasn't a concern. Retrax takes it a step further here on the Pro XR and allows you to stop this anywhere. Whenever you close that latch, it'll bite into the side rail and stop it at whatever spot you want. So if you have maybe some lumber or some ladders sticking out of the end of your truck bed and you want this cover most of the way closed so you can get some of those fuel economy benefits, but still have room for that elongated load, you can and you can get that lined up perfectly for whatever you have in there. If you have a short bed Tundra like this one and you're on the fence about it because of the space taken up by the canister, you might be wondering how much. So from the front edge of the truck bed to the furthest out point when it's fully opened here, it's gonna be about 13 1/2 inches. And from the bottom of th
