Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, Ida Pearl was a powerhouse blues singer known for her smoky voice, fiery temper, and a taste for danger. She cut her teeth in the smoky clubs of Bronzeville, trading verses with guitarists twice her age before landing a short-lived deal in 1965 that produced her best-known track, “I Poured Whiskey on My Pussycat.”
Her raw performances and unapologetic lyrics made her both magnetic and unpredictable — a “wild girl” in a scene ruled by men. As the years wore on, Ida drifted between gigs, love affairs, and a growing heroin habit. By the mid-’70s she had disappeared from Chicago’s circuit entirely.
In 1979, she was found dead in a run-down Minneapolis apartment at the age of 39. Few records of her survive, but among blues collectors, Ida Pearl remains a whispered name — a symbol of brilliance burned too fast.
