Summary:
The United Kingdom has agreed to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, ending a decades-long colonial dispute. However, the U.K. will retain a 99-year lease on Diego Garcia, the largest island in the archipelago, which hosts a strategic U.S. military base. The base will remain under British-American control for over $100 million per year.

This follows rulings by international courts that deemed the U.K.’s separation of the islands from Mauritius in the 1960s illegal. Mauritius has hailed the agreement as the completion of its decolonization, while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the military and security importance of Diego Garcia, especially in cooperation with the U.S. and its allies.

The move is controversial: some Chagossians, who were forcibly displaced for the base’s construction, say the deal fails to guarantee their right of return. Critics, including Conservative and Reform U.K. leaders, accused the government of undermining British sovereignty and potentially empowering China, which has ties to Mauritius.
