Hidden amongst the trees of the Unawatuna rainforests and yet visible across the water from the historic Galle Fort in the Bay of Galle is the “Sama Ceitya”, one of four Japanese Peace Pagodas that can be found in Sri Lanka. Situated on Rummasala Hill, it was built with the assistance of Japanese Buddhist monks in 2005 (when Sri Lanka was still in the midst of fighting a devastating civil war) as part of a plan to build temples of peace in conflict zones.The Peace Pagoda
Perched atop the serene and myserious Rumassala hill, the Peace Pagoda stands as a symbol of harmony and spirituality. This white stupa, officially known as Sama Ceitya, was constructed by the Japanese Buddhist order Nipponzan Myohoji on the 23rd of February, 2004.


It is one of five such pagodas in Sri Lanka, with the others located in Sri Pada, Bandarawela, Walapane, and Ampara. Around the world, similar Peace Pagodas can be found in countries such as Japan, India, Nepal, Australia, Italy, and the United States, with over 80 having been built by the year 2000.

Architecturally, the stupa is encircled by a wide pathway that visitors can walk around. Four statues of the Buddha placed at intervals represent pivotal moments in his life—his birth, enlightenment, first sermon, and Parinibbana. The site offers stunning panoramic views of the ocean, and a shaded beach path leads gently from the pagoda down to the sea, lined with mature trees that enhance the tranquil atmosphere.
