We're finally caught up in the films! Welcome to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park! It is another feature found in Southern Colorado. Black Canyon gets its name from the bedrock found here. It is, for the most part, containing schist (metamorphic), gneiss (metamorphic), feldspar (igneous), and granite (igneous).
The difference between igneous and metamorphic rocks has to do with formation. Igneous rocks typically include intrusive magma cooling over a long period. Whereas metamorphic rocks are formed from heat and pressure. For example, gneiss was formed from granite after being exposed to heat and pressure.
The Black Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in the United States. It is comparable to the height of Burj Khalifa, which is one of the tallest skyscrapers reaching about 2,700 feet. The place is named after John Gunnison, who was a military officer who explored this region to expand the Pacific railroad. This canyon is very difficult to cross as most of it includes vertical cliffs!
