On February 21st 1977, Elvis played to 13 000 at the Coliseum, Charlotte, North Carolina. It was the final show of a tough tour in freezing winter conditions, and the second night in Charlotte.
This is a soundboard recording of around half the concert. The first highlight is right at the beginning, when Estelle Brown nails Elvis over his forgetting the words to Are You Lonesome Tonight. There’s a nice version of Reconsider Baby, Moody Blue, and an unrehearsed but tight version of Please Release Me at the end. You can hear, at the beginning of Please Release Me, piano player Tony Brown trying desperately to work out how it goes, much to Elvis’ amusement, but they soon all get it together and it's a powerful version.
Two local papers, the Charlotte News and Charlotte Observer reviewed the Feb 20th performance, and both made mention of the devotion of the audiences.
“…It was an hysterical evening from the beginning. The parking lot was filling steadily by 7.00 - despite the sold-out house and the 8.30 showtime. Elvis himself didn't come on until 10.00, and the tension was so thick by then even some fan who bore a faint resemblance to Presley was mobbed for autographs. The madness repeats itself tonight..."
"...At 9.45 pm, the loudspeaker calls for people to move quickly to their seats. A roar comes from the crowd. Lights dim. Another roar. Elvis emerges. Intense roar becomes screaming thunder. Camera bulbs flash like flak in the Battle for Britain. It doesn't matter that the highest part of Elvis' shimmering white outfit is his bulging waist. He struts, shakes, grabs the microphone and "C.C. Rider" leads the way. He smiles and they yell, he laughs at the yelling and they scream, he swings a leg to one side and they stretch their arms out to him…”
But there was also some more serious reporting on his vocal abilities. Faye Gaillard in the Observer wrote;
“…You could see why Elvis Presley is still going strong after 20 years, while dozens of others have fallen by the way. As he came to the part where he belts out the title, he sounded like Mario Lanza with soul - cutting loose a series of high notes that would tingle the spine of even the die-hard sceptic…”
(Correction: The tour was over ten nights, not nine as stated in the presentation, from February 12th to February 21st)
