Directed by the legendary D.W. Griffith for the American Biograph Company. Notice the "AB" logo as a kind of Easter Egg throughout the interior scenes. With Florence as his star in countless Biograph productions, Griffith was honing his directing skills by churning out one and two reel shorts like these. This is presumably a two-reeler, since it's longer than 11 minutes.
This old fashioned weepy, with its seriously depressing subject matter, was one of dozens of short dramas Florence Lawrence made with Biograph.
Outside of dramatic roles, she was equally beloved for her comedic performances, especially in the role of the irascible Mrs. Jones in the "Jones Series" of comedies, made around this same time.
