STORY OF Col. BAROG :-

Col. Barog refers to Colonel Barog, the British engineer who was tasked with building a tunnel on the Kalka-Shimla Railway in Himachal Pradesh. The project was a failure due to a miscalculation in the tunnel's alignment, leading the embarrassed colonel to commit suicide near the site. Today, the hill station of Barog is named after him, and his grave is a point of historical interest near the Barog railway station.

The story of Colonel BAROG :-

• The project: Colonel Barog was put in charge of building a tunnel on the Kalka-Shimla Railway line.
• The mistake: He decided to dig the tunnel from both ends simultaneously, but a miscalculation in the alignment meant the two ends could not meet.
• The aftermath: The British government fined him the symbolic amount of one rupee, which he found a source of deep humiliation.
• The tragedy: Overwhelmed with shame, Colonel Barog committed suicide by shooting himself near the unfinished tunnel.
• The legacy: His grave is located near the site of the original tunnel, and the hill station itself was named after him.
• The Barog Tunnel and subsequent construction
• After Colonel Barog's death, the tunnel was completed under the supervision of Chief Engineer H.S. Harrington, with the help of a local saint named Baba Bhalku.
• The tunnel was relocated by about a kilometer from the original site to ensure it was a success.
• The completed Barog Tunnel is one of the longest tunnels on the Kalka-Shimla route.

Barog is a hill station, near City of Solan in Solan district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The station lies on UNESCO World Heritage Site Kalka–Shimla Railway. Set in the mountains Barog is just 60 km (37 mi) from Chandigarh on the Kalka-Shimla highway.
