The popularity of riding e-bikes and e-scooters has soared in recent years and has become especially appealing to younger riders. In fact, the number of children and teenagers using these alternative modes of transportation has increased so rapidly that city leaders are focusing on safety education for drivers, riders and their families.
On behalf of the City of Winter Park, Commissioner Craig Russell hosted an e-bike & e-scooter safety community meeting
Tuesday, February 17, at 5:30 p.m., at the Winter Park Community Center.
The purpose of this meeting was for attendees to:
• learn about existing e-bike & e-scooter rules
• review current e-bike & e-scooter trends
Following the educational presentation, a brief Q&A session was moderated by Commissioner Russell. Attendees asked questions of the following panelists:
• Adriana Rodriguez, Senior Transportation Engineer, MetroPlan Orlando
• Lindsey Ellison, Community Resource Officer, Winter Park Police Department
• Stephanie Vanos, District 6, Board Member, Orange County Public Schools
“As a coach, educator, mentor, parent and community leader, I’m concerned for the safety of the kids I see every day riding to and from school on these devices. The convenience and freedom of e-bikes and e-scooters is very appealing. However, if families are allowing their children to ride them, the entire family needs to be aware of the rules of the road,” shared Commissioner Russell. “I encourage all parents, teachers, children, drivers and members of the community to attend. I want to make sure our kids (and parents) have the correct information for them to ride safely with confidence, respect and awareness.”
