STORYLINE:
Egypt's government denied on Monday that its security services had anything to do with the brutal killing of an Italian student whose body was found on the outskirts of Cairo bearing signs of torture.
In a news conference, Interior Minister Magdy Abdel-Ghaffar denied the student had ever been arrested and said accusations that security agents were involved in the death were "very annoying and frustrating".
He said Egypt's security agencies are "known for integrity and transparency," adding that the student's killing was a "mysterious crime".
He vowed to hunt down the culprits but said investigators are still in the process of collecting data.
Abdel-Ghaffar's remarks came a day after Italy said the body of Giulio Regeni, who arrived in Egypt in September to research labour rights and went missing on 25 January for nine days, showed the victim suffered "inhuman, animal-like" violence.
The 25 January was the anniversary of the 2011 uprising, a day when police were out in force.
Egyptian authorities informed Italian authorities on 3 February that Regeni's body had been found along a highway, blaming the death at first on a road accident.
