Le Petit Dru

Io l'ho conosciuto leggendo della scalata di Walter Bonatti. Nel 1955, in solitaria, a un certo punto si trovò sul granito, senza appigli e senza possibilità di continuare ad arrampicare verso l'alto, o scendere. Si salvò lanciando tutta la corda che gli era rimasta e facendola impigliare in uno sperone di roccia a dieci metri da lui. Poi si issò fin là a forza di braccia, non sapendo essere sicuro che l'appiglio avrebbe retto il suo peso.
Oggi purtroppo la sua via è franata. Spero che le immagini rendano la difficoltà dell'impresa.

The Petit Dru is a beautiful peak in the Mont Blanc massif, near Chamonix.
I learned about it while reading about Walter Bonatti's climb. In 1955, while climbing solo, he found himself on granite, with no handholds and no possibility of continuing to climb upwards or descending. He saved himself by throwing the rest of his rope and catching it on a rock spur ten meters away. He then hoisted himself up there using his arms, not knowing for sure if the hold would support his weight.
Unfortunately, his route has now collapsed. I hope the images convey the difficulty of the feat.
