In this episode of Operation Break the Chain, Parys Hall interviews Partnership to End Human Trafficking’s Executive Director, Jamie Manirakiza and Evee who serves as the Creative Associate/Social Media Specialist at PEHT and is a survivor advocate.
Evee lived her first few years in Hartford County, CT, until entering the foster care system at 16 years old. Soon becoming sexually exploited by older men and bouncing between various emergency foster homes and group homes. Since exiting “The life” in 2017 she has done much healing, and has aspired to use her pain and healing to help other people, thus giving purpose to her pain. In 2022, she met a fellow survivor who taught her not to live her life in fear, unlocking the advocate inside and the passion to not let fear mute her voice. She currently aspires to return to school one day to become a Case Manager to further help other survivors. Utilizing her life experiences and various artistic passions to help further efforts to bring awareness to end Human Trafficking.
Jamie Manirakiza has accumulated over 15 years of experience in the anti-human trafficking field. Jamie took on the role of Executive Director at PEHT in July 2020, with a mission to establish one of Connecticut’s pioneering residential programs for survivors of sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. Under her leadership, a 24-month residential program has been established, and a survivor-led Social Enterprise business has been relaunched to provide employment opportunities for women affected by human trafficking, commercial sexual exploitation, or sexual violence.
Before joining PEHT, Jamie held several significant positions with The Salvation Army, including her longest tenure as Director of Anti-Trafficking for the New Day to Stop Trafficking Program in Greater Philadelphia. Notably, she played a key role in starting a drop-in center for women exploited by the commercial sex industry and was part of the founding team that opened a residential program utilizing harm reduction, motivational interviewing, and the Sanctuary Model® for trauma-informed care.
In addition to her executive role, Jamie is an adjunct professor for Vanguard University’s Human Trafficking Certificate Program and has provided consulting services on crime victim support for various national organizations. She holds an MSW degree from the University of Pennsylvania and is a licensed social worker.
