Why on earth would someone from a poor village study mathematics? What is it like to do mathematics in the dark?
At an early age I began to explore the reasons for mathematics. This was a challenging pursuit due to limited available resources and the stigma around maths, that no one from a village ever made it in Maths. (I was discouraged from pursuing my dream of studying mathematics whenever I shared my enthusiasm and excitement for the subject.) In this talk, I will unpack my personal encounter with mathematics stereotypes and how to remain steadfast in a maths career journey despite cultural norms, life challenges, and criticism. Finally, I hope to 'evangelise' that Maths birthed in challenges is far richer.
