It's not just "what bit did you use?" but also HOW did you introduce it - did the horse understand the basics of vocal commands, lunge, long line, walk trot canter all with the halter first?
If not, there may be pain (and then fear) associated with everything you are trying to teach the horse if you don't prepare the horse before adding a bit in their highly sensitive mouth.
Many people training horses overlook the emotional state of the horse and assume they will get over it. Many horses do improve w with time, but some do not and have tension, pain, and worry, which makes it hard for the horse to think .
Anytime you can break things into smaller steps and have regard for how the horse is feeling about things, you help the horse learn without fear or confusion.
