Professionally, the Stones had problems. They had always been treated by the media as direct rivals of the Beatles – both in image and in music. To some extent the treatment was justified, and the careers of both bands seemed to be evolving along parallel lines. But now, after months of music-business rumors, the Beatles had delivered their masterwork, an album titled Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The album was dazzling and innovative and was hailed by critics as the greatest rock album of all time. The cover, by Michael Cooper, set a new standard for album artwork, and the idea of printing lyrics on the sleeve was one that was to be aped by every band in the world. Musically it was of an originality and imaginative quality that rock music had never seen before.
Mick realized at once that it made all previous records of both the Beatles and Stones seem curiously old-fashioned, outmoded.
“It’s psychedelic, man,” he argued with Brian. “Pretty soon everything is going to be psychedelic, and if we aren’t in there next album, we will be left behind. No one is going to want to listen to rhythm and blues any more.”
Brian hated the new sound, and he fought bitterly – and vainly – for the Stones to stay true to their roots, to keep on chugging out the high-energy rock’n’roll that had sent audiences berserk in almost every country in the world.
“If he insists on recording that crap, the Stones are dead,” Brian told me bitterly.
But Jagger won, and he conceived with Keith the idea of an album called Her Satanic Majesties Request, (Flip note: the original title was Her Satanic Majesty Requests and Requires, a variation on the heading of British passports. But Decca rejected that one.) a record that was to be a psychedelic satire on the Queen.
Brian’s hurt was compounded because Anita (Pallenberg) had again drifted back to Keith. [Flip note: For a time after initially leaving Brian for Keith, Anita went back and forth between the two. Part of the reason was Brian’s suicidal impulses. He tried to kill himself in Morocco when she first left. But Brian was also the most glamorous Stone and the two of them together were media darlings in Europe, in contrast to Keith, whose style and manner of dress were drab compared with Brian’s. Anita may have also enjoyed the feeling of power she wielded over both of them, and the band.] And the album became the focus of every thing that was going wrong among Mick, Keith and Brian.
