Eltham Palace stands as one of England's most extraordinary architectural treasures—a medieval royal residence that witnessed six centuries of British history before being transformed into a breathtaking Art Deco masterpiece. This is the forgotten story of a palace where Byzantine emperors jousted, where the young Henry VIII met Erasmus, and where a pet lemur once roamed through rooms designed by Europe's finest craftsmen.
In the 1470s, King Edward IV built the magnificent Great Hall with its soaring hammerbeam roof—the third-largest of its kind in England. For generations, Tudor monarchs celebrated Christmas here, hunted in the vast deer parks, and conducted the business of the realm. But after the English Civil War, this once-glorious palace was abandoned, stripped, and left to decay for over 250 years. Artists like J.M.W. Turner painted its romantic ruins, and it seemed destined to crumble into dust.
Then, in 1933, something remarkable happened. Stephen and Virginia Courtauld—wealthy industrialists with impeccable taste—acquired the ruins and commissioned one of the most daring architectural projects of the 20th century. Rather than demolish the medieval hall, they chose to restore it and attach a cutting-edge Art Deco house that would become a masterpiece of modern design. Swedish and Italian designers created interiors featuring blackbean marquetry, circular bedrooms, chrome fixtures, and Art Deco perfection. And yes, their pet ring-tailed lemur, Mah-Jongg, had his own specially designed room with a hatch to move between floors.
This documentary explores the complete history of Eltham Palace—from royal gift to Byzantine imperial visit, from Tudor Christmas celebrations to Civil War devastation, from centuries of abandonment to Art Deco resurrection, and finally to its modern role as one of England's most unique heritage sites. Discover how this building survived against all odds, how medieval and modern architecture can coexist in stunning harmony, and why the story of Eltham Palace reveals profound truths about how we preserve and adapt our architectural heritage.
