When I first started ChiTownView part of the reason was to document the Chicago area designs of prairie school master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Living in Oak Park, which has more of his homes than anywhere else, this is where I started. The village is an open air prairie laboratory with dozens of homes in that style designed by the likes of E.E. Roberts, John S. Van Bergen, Charles White and Tallmadge & Watson as well as beautiful homes in a wide variety of styles. I've always wanted to get back and present some of the others. Well this is the time and between now and when the weather gets nasty again I plan on taking some strolls through the village and sharing what I find.

The 600 block of N. East Ave. is home to Wright's William E. Martin House located at 636. It is one of his more striking designs. But this is a block with several beautiful homes that caught my eye here are three of them. Standing at the corner of East and Iowa is this imposing Craftsman style home was designed Thornton A. Herr and built in 1911. Right across the street from the Martin house we find the Vernon Skiff House a prairie influenced design by Nimmons and Fellows that was built in 1909. This firm was known maily for designing commercial buildings like the massive Sears warehouse, distribution and administrative center on West Arthington Avenue at Homan. Next door to Skiff house at 623 we find the Barrett Andrews House another prairie gem this one designed by Tallmadge and Watson and built in 1906. While they are renown for their prairie designs the firm also designed more than 30 churches.
