They happen to be one of the most predominant foundations in the San Francisco Bay area because this area is largely overlain with expensive clay soils and Hills and mountain sides with deep coverage by soil prone to seismic instigated landslides. The other common foundation types, spread footings, and concrete slabs are often destroyed by the expensive nature of the soil in this area, and the only solution to keeping a house that doesn’t have cracks in the sheet rock and the occasional broken window and doors that don’t open one season and open other seasons is to isolate the house from the expansive soil and the only way to do that without a basement is with appear in grade being foundation.
