This video: Movement: The Key To Learning (6th August 2016), is help demonstrate the inextricable link between movement, learning and the development of character. Parents, teenagers and adults will benefit from it - as it is often thought that intelligence only refers to that of the intellect.
When it comes to intelligence, there is not a single person on this planet who wouldn't agree that Albert Einstein, Issac Newton and Stephen Hawkins are all extremely intelligent. But what we often overlook is that this is only one form of intelligence – the intellect.
The American developmental psychologist Howard Gardner describes 8 types of intelligence.
1. Musical/Rhythmic Intelligence: Creating and feeling a rhythm to express a mood; detecting and analyzing musical themes.
2. Visual/Spatial Intelligence: Creating and interpreting visual images; thinking in three dimensions.
3. Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence: Using language to present your ideas; express your feelings or to persuade others.
4. Logical/Mathematical Intelligence: Reasoning, logical thinking or handling mathematical problems.
5. Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence: Feeling and expressing things physically i.e. doing hands on work.
6. Interpersonal Intelligence (between People): Understanding the feelings, needs and purposes of others.
7. Intrapersonal Intelligence (within the self): Understanding your own internal thoughts and feelings in a very clear way
8. Naturalistic Intelligence: Understanding nature, seeing patterns in the way nature works; classifying things
Gardner would describe Husain Bolt, Andy Murray, Jessica Ennis and Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi as having "Bodily Kinesthetic Intelligence."
Movement helps us understand who we are and what we are capable of achieving.
This year you will see hundreds of athletes in the Olympics compete for the highly coveted gold medal but don't just think that it is all about physical prowess. The Olympics is the epitome of physical intelligence; the culmination of several thousand hours of mental and physical learning.
When it comes to learning movement is the key.
Movement is the physical manifestation of our thoughts.
One of my most favourite quotes in relation to movement, learning and development of character comes from Plato. He said: "In order for man to succeed in life God provided him with two means education and physical activity. Not separately one for the soul and the other for the body but for the two together. With these two means man can attain perfection."
Movement is essential for our learning, it's essential for our growth and it's essential for our success.
