Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof Le Cateau was created by German troops after the battles of 25-27 August 1914 between Le Cateau and Solesmes, in the course of which the British troops had to clear the field.
The British dead were also buried in their own part of the cemetery.
Later in The Great War, soldiers who died here as a result of their wounds or died as a result of accidents and illnesses found their final resting place.
However, the majority of the victims lost their lives in 1918 and died of wounds in the hospitals and in late autumn during the defensive battles, which also raged in and around Le Cateau in October 1918.
After the fighting was over, the funeral of the German soldiers who were found cleaning up the battlefields took place.
Those who were resting here belonged to the troops, whose homeland garrisons lay in almost all countries of the former German Reich.
The French military authorities expanded the cemetery in the years 1921 - 1923 by the addition of German war veterans from 53 municipal areas in the area, including more than 1,000 dead of the German cemetery in Maubeuge.
This cemetery is maintained by volunteers of Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V.
