𝗣𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗜𝗧 𝗢𝗡: Pier Ramp Foundations Underway

Описание: On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, crews advanced foundation preparations for the temporary vehicle ramp and pedestrian bridge associated with the Santa Monica Pier Bridge Replacement Project.

Workers were observed installing multiple cylindrical concrete forms, commonly known as Sonotubes, along the north side of the Pier. The forms were placed into excavated holes adjacent to existing utilities and structural elements. A concrete truck later arrived on site, and crews filled around the forms with slurry to stabilize the surrounding soil in preparation for structural pours.

The Sonotubes—spiral-wound fiberboard concrete forms—will shape the vertical piers that support the temporary ramp structure. These single-use forms are designed to withstand the hydrostatic pressure of wet concrete while producing uniform cylindrical columns. Once concrete cures, the forms are removed, leaving load-bearing foundations in place.

Heavy equipment staged nearby included a piling drill rig—also referred to as a micropile or foundation drilling rig—positioned and ready for operation. The tracked rig will be used to drill deep vertical shafts into stable ground. After drilling, steel reinforcement cages will be inserted and filled with concrete, forming structural columns capable of transferring the ramp’s load into competent soil layers below.

Additional crews were simultaneously working on the Pier deck, where a section of wooden planking was removed. Workers used pry bars and hand tools to dismantle deteriorated boards, exposing the underlying timber framing.

Foundation construction for the temporary pedestrian bridge and vehicle ramp is expected to continue for approximately four weeks, with weekday work hours from 5 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Officials advise that drilling operations and heavy machinery may generate noise during this phase. Access to the Pier remains open throughout construction.
