Описание: Four years ago I gave birth at home to a beautiful baby boy. No pain meds, no equipment, just me, my husband and our wonderful midwife who also happened to be my neighbour, which was very convenient for a home birth! I had just barely reached 10 cm dilated when the midwife, after checking the baby’s heart rate, looked me calmly but sternly in the eyes and said, “His heart rate is dropping dramatically. Becki, you need to push this baby out right now.” It was an impossible challenge and my body didn’t feel nearly ready, but with her help, Caleb Valour Prins came into this world in two monster pushes, a little bit blue and not crying. Thankfully after a minute or two he made up for that. I still shudder to think of what would have happened if she had not been there with her expertise and decisive action. But then the next problem. I had experienced severe tearing from the viciously quick delivery. So after all of that work so we could stay at home, we all packed up and headed to the hospital. The next couple of hours was one of the most gruelling experiences of my life. After giving birth with no epidural, I wasn’t about to give in to one now. So for over an hour, the obstetrician stitched me back together, using about 5 feet of suture thread. It was excruciating. And there was my midwife, right beside me as my husband took care of our newborn. She rubbed my arm, smiled at me and told me that she knew it was so hard and that I was doing so well. Her love made the pain easier to bear.

I found out a week or so later that she was actually on a sick leave from work, and had not taken on any other clients. But still she came to check on Caleb and I a few times in our home, and was still available by text for my many questions over the next weeks. After a month or two, I found out that she was actually extremely sick. Cancer. And then it moved into her lymph system. The residents of our little street were completely shocked when she passed away on February 9th, 2022. Caleb was the last baby she delivered.

I will never forget you, Emilia. Your kindness, your touch, your smile, the way you made the pain of a horribly difficult experience a little less bitter with your sweetness. I will never forget these gifts that you gave me. Everytime I look at Caleb, I am grateful for you. And whenever I see your favourite flower, I will think of you.
