Sualkuchi, situated in Kamrup district on the north bank of the Brahmaputra just 30-odd kilometres from Guwahati, is considered one of the biggest weaving villages in the world. The silk hub is world famous for its silk weaves — eri, muga and paat. However in March, after lockdown was imposed to curb Covid-19 spread all over the country, its 17,000 handlooms came to a halt which left thousands of weavers without an income as the sales dipped also zero.
