MC Toy were the precursor to the much more prominent Maisto brand. MC Toy's lineup of 1/60 castings mostly consisted of Matchbox copies or variations. This is kind of an exception. Although Lesney had produced the VW Golf LS for the Matchbox range back in the 1970s, this is the GTI version, with greatly exaggerated wheel arches, front lip and rear spoiler. It is a little excessive in this department in my opinion. So to counter this, I decided to give this casting a more realistic makeover and lessen the impact of those huge flared arches.

I use some excellent Pirelli P-Slot replicas to replace the wheels, as seen on the original Mark 1 GTI. I detail the plastic grille with a distinctive red frame that defined the GTI from the rest of the range as well as filling out all of the black plastic trim. This was a fun little project car!
