Chapter Thirty Nine
Dissecting this piece was heavy. Especially realising that one of the featured guitar solos was played by Barney Kessel, a jazz legend but also one of the most recorded session guitarists in history. This hit the spot with Artie and his particular interest and passion for jazz. We were on the lookout for a set opener for our Homage to T-Bone, and this tune fit the bill accurately. It was up and energetic, it had a catchy head masterly harmonised in a two-guitar alignment. What more can you ask for? Well, the entry of Kessel’s solo will take your head off, following a chorus of saxophone musings, there’s a four bar, call and response big-band arrangement from which a bottom-heavy solo passages emerge. Barney’s bottom string detuned to Eb makes a focal stand of his section. He plays like a devil exposing a brand new dimension to the blues as we now it. T-Bone comes down running after another band break, doing his thing. Let’s not forget his nephew, R.S.Rankin who takes the first solo, no wonder he was also known as T-Bone Junior. Lux arrangement also involves some engaging rhythmic parts. The full works.
