YouThey appear increasingly in numbers, silently, somehow like the Tom Thumb's crumbs, they mark and map the territory, often "polluted" with thousands of visual inputs. They are the little men by Clet Abraham, Breton artist, half Florentine, who for two years, at night, has been pasting removable stickers onto the street signs of the main cities, giving the passers-by a smile. But the Clet's purpose is much more profound, and it is worthwhile stopping and reflecting to better understand his aesthetical blitzes, that are no anarchy hymns, but rather an admonition to think about how society has become more and more standardized, channelled, constricted by rules to the detriment of the individual expression and intelligence.
Clet in fact provocatively defines the ordinary street signs as the «unique form of contemporary art that could powerfully establish in the public space». So his personages, Christs crucified, Madonnas, angels, devils, modern Cyrenians with heavy crossbeams in their arms, become the symbols of his artistic crusade. Obviously the religious references are not coincidental: Abraham, as a non-practising catholic, criticizes the religions that in his opinion are about "to go adrift", becoming more and more "ready-made", thus losing values and identity
It is hopeful that these urban actions can arouse the attention of our local administrations too, who frequently do not place much value on the "public space", the squares and the streets of our cities that should desirably become the stage for cultural events and artistic expressions.
