Often referred to as "the most influential Japanese artist of the 2000s," Hikaru Utada broke onto the music scene in the late 90s with the release of her debut Japanese album, "First Love," which saw immediate success, charting at #1 on the Oricon Albums Chart for 6 weeks and selling over 11 million copies worldwide. Since then, she has sold over 50 million records, with twenty of her singles and ten of her albums being chart-toppers in Japan. She is also well known to international audiences for her contribution to the Disney video game franchise "Kingdom Hearts" with the songs "Simple & Clean" and "Face My Fears".

Released under the pseudonym "Cubic U", "Precious" was Hikaru Utada's debut English album, which was recorded in New York City in 1996 and was intended for a U.S. release in 1997 but was shelved due to internal issues with Utada's label EMI. It was eventually released in Japan in January 1998, where it failed to find success. It would later be reissued a year later, following the success of Utada's Japanese album "First Love", where it managed to peak at #2 on the Oricon Albums Chart, where it sold over 700,000 copies.
