The Bat Whispers (1930) is an early sound mystery–thriller set in a secluded mansion where a masked criminal known as “the Bat” terrorizes a group of guests amid hidden passages and false identities. Directed by Roland West and released by United Artists, the film stars Chester Morris, Una Merkel, and Grayce Hampton, adapting Mary Roberts Rinehart and Avery Hopwood’s popular stage play. Shot simultaneously in both standard 35mm and experimental 65mm widescreen (Magnifilm), the film is notable for its ambitious visual style and pioneering use of sound-era camera movement. While it received no major awards, its atmosphere and technical experimentation influenced later horror and mystery films, including early Universal thrillers.
