🎮 Spotlight: Urban Champion (NES, 1986) & Joy Mech Fight (Famicom, 1993)
This week we’re looking at two very different fighting games from across the NES era. One was an early attempt at a street brawler. The other pushed the hardware to its limit at the end of the system’s life.
Urban Champion (1986) is a super simple one-on-one street fight from Nintendo R&D1. Two fighters, light and heavy punches, blocking, and the goal is to knock your opponent down the block or into an open manhole. It has bright, cartoonish visuals and that early-NES charm. It’s more of a curiosity today than something worth revisiting, but it’s interesting as one of Nintendo’s earliest steps into the fighting genre.
Joy Mech Fight (1993) came much later and was exclusive to Japan. Also developed by Nintendo R&D1, this one pushes the NES way further than you’d expect. Characters are robots made up of separate floating body parts, allowing for surprisingly smooth animation and tons of personality. With over 36 playable fighters and unique moves, it’s a genuinely fun and inventive late-era surprise.
Fun Fact: The main character from Joy Mech Fight, Sukapon, actually shows up in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Spirit and Assist Trophy.
Bottom line: Urban Champion shows Nintendo experimenting early. Joy Mech Fight shows what they learned by the end.
