In 1877 a short 2 mile branch left the Woodhead Route just west of Deepcar Station to serve steelworks at Stocksbridge.
When the through route to Manchester closed in 1981 this branch remained as a freight line.
Although the lines are still down, it has been out of use since September 2024.
In this short video we explore what remains of part of the route. The steelworks is still active as of 2024 and still has it's internal rail network, but goods in and out are by road.
The future of the trackbed is uncertain. There are plans to extend the tram network from Sheffield to serve Fox Valley Retail park, which occupies part of the former steelworks.
