This Japanese video for beginners will test your knowledge of the Japanese Hiragana writing system. There are 25 vocabulary words in this quiz. Most words will have a double consonant, but a few will not. This is done to test your ability to recognize the different sizes of the tsu character. You will have 3 seconds to read and give your answer for each word. After the 3 seconds are up, the correct answer will appear in the romaji alphabet along with the correct pronunciation and English translation/meaning of the word. Can you get all of them right?
This video is meant to supplement Japanese language study, along with the rest of my Hiragana Lessons videos. This quiz covers the concept learned in the fourth lesson (Hiragana Double Consonants (Soku-on)). So, if you struggle with reading the characters/vocabulary during this quiz, I recommend revisiting that particular lesson.
Double consonants are created when a small(chiisai) tsu character (also called soku-on) is placed before a k- Column (ka, ki, ku, ke, ko), s- Column (sa, shi, su, se, so), t- Column (ta, chi, tsu, te, to), or p- Column (pa, pi, pu, pe, po) character, becoming kk, ss, tt, or pp. A double consonant n is different, as it occurs when the n character is placed before an n- Column (na, ni, nu, ne, no) character. Double consonants can be expressed by adding a short pause in their place within a word, as to extend the sound of the consonant that follows.
Hiragana is one of the three writing systems in the Japanese language, along with Katakana and Kanji. It is the foundation to learning Japanese, and once you master this kana, you can move on to the second step, learning Katakana and vocabulary!

Duolingo is another great free tool for learning the kana, so I suggest you give the app a try as well!
I hope that this video is helpful to you and that you continue to study Japanese with me!
