AVONDALE, Ohio (WKRC) - Some cities are reeling over the past year in crime.
Indianapolis had more homicides than 2015, when the city broke its all- time record for murder. But in Cincinnati, homicides were down again.
Caution tape around an apartment building on Blair Avenue had to do with renovation, not a crime scene such as the summer evening a 4-year-old was shot in a drive by. Elizabeth Thompson bought a house on Blair years ago. People said she was crazy. Crime stats did too but something's changed in Avondale where shootings dropped 31 percent in 2016 over the year before.
Residents look out for one another and also help police. A place-based strategy goes after people who cause troubles and the places where they hang out. For example, the Ponciana Apartments on Reading Road where a teenager was shot and killed in 2014. It's now renovated, with different people living inside.
Lt. Colonel Dave Bailey said police departments were starting to realize crime problems were not just police problems. Cincinnati's been called a model city for its problem solving partnership with communities.
Residents are proud to live in Avondale where they’re fed up with crime and then did something about it.
Shootings and homicides were both down double digits compared with 2015.
