On 21 November 2025, at the We the 99% Social Summit at Constitution Hill, the Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) and the Union Against Hunger hosted a powerful public workshop exploring one urgent question: why is food becoming more expensive, and who really benefits?
As millions of households struggle to afford nutritious food, rising and volatile food prices continue to deepen hunger and inequality in South Africa. While food inflation has slowed, prices remain high — placing low-income households at the mercy of a corporate-controlled food system, climate shocks, and weak regulation.
This session unpacks:
-Why food prices surged in recent years
-Who profits from rising food costs
-How high prices impact hunger and nutrition
-What government and society can do to stabilise prices
-What a just, resilient, and nourishing food system could look like
The conversation connects food prices to the constitutional right to food, climate justice, dignity, and the need for policies that make food available, accessible, and affordable for all.
Watch the full discussion and join the call for a fairer food system in South Africa.
