This is the first English fortress in India, founded in 1639 by the East India Company, when the area was just uninhabited land. It was named after the patron saint of England, St. George. The city of Madras evolved around the fort.

The Fort houses the Dept. of Defense and multiple Chief Secretaries and Ministers. I had to go through intimidating security checks before getting to The Fort Museum, which has many items from the British rule. No photography is allowed. The ticket could only be purchased online which I didn't know before, so I sat for like half an hour outside trying to get it done - finally it worked!

St Mary's Church within Fort St George is the oldest Anglican church in India, completed in 1680. The graveyard has the oldest English tombstones in India.

Baptisms have been done at this Font since 1680.
