Prostitution is known as one of the oldest professions in the world and for a long time, it did not find dignity in Indian society. In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court has recognised sex work as a 'profession' and asked police not to interfere or take criminal action against consenting sex workers. It said that "prostitution is a profession and sex workers are entitled to dignity and equal protection under the law."
