This is an update to the video, “Mid-Autumn Festival” by Groovi Pauli & Friends. We added actions in the lower left screen, to allow learners to follow along with the words. There is also a section at the end to help learners practice the actions, and some questions posed by Groovi Pauli for learners to answer. Younger kids are sure to enjoy this longer version of the video!
In a simple yet accessible way, this music video introduces some of the key features of this major Chinese holiday, "Mid-Autumn Festival," celebrated by Chinese communities around the world. The video by Groovi Pauli & Friends is set to a song from their third album, "Celebrations in Chinese 4 Kids" (2012). It is sung in a call and response style that makes it easy to follow along to, especially for young children. The lyrics are as follows:
月亮月亮圆圆圆 yuè liang yuè liang yuán yuán yuán
(moon, moon, round round round)
月饼月饼香香香 yuè bǐng yuè bǐng xiāng xiāng xiāng
(moon cakes, moon cakes, fragrant fragrant fragrant)
嫦娥嫦娥飞飞飞 cháng é cháng é fēi fēi fēi
(Chang-E Chang-E fly fly fly)
中秋中秋中秋节 zhōng qiū zhōng qiū zhōng qiū jié
(Mid-Autumn, Mid-Autumn, Mid-Autumn Festival)
When the lunar calendar arrives at the mid-Autumn point, the moon is full and round. Moon cakes are eaten to symbolize this. Chang-E is an important character in China's history as she sacrificed herself for the good of the people by taking an elixir that gave her everlasting life. She is said to have flown to the moon and can be seen there, along with a rabbit who keeps her company.
We hope you enjoy your Mid-Autumn Festival celebration!
