Multiplying Good joins the nation in mourning the loss of singer, activist, and actor Harry Belafonte. As the world remembers him as a trailblazer, we remember him as a friend, Jefferson Award recipient, and member of the Multiplying Good community.
A Grammy-winning singer and Tony- and Oscar-winning actor, he was not only one of the most popular entertainers of the 20th century, but also a tireless activist for civil rights across the decades. He used his fame and wealth to bankroll causes including the Civil Rights Movement in America and campaigns against poverty, apartheid, and Aids in Africa. He was mentored by Paul Robeson and Martin Luther King Jr, bailing the latter out of a Birmingham, Alabama, jail in 1963 and helping to organize the 1963 March on Washington.
Harry Belafonte was honored with the Jefferson Award for Lifetime Achievement in Public Service in 2017 and said, in part:
"What this evening does is something that’s near and dear to my heart. It validates the things I stood for. And not everything that I’ve stood for has always fell into the purview of mass approval. Many things I’ve done have provoked. Many things I’ve done have challenged, and in some instances, there was a price to be paid. But I will say that that price is more and worthy of being visited upon when it comes to a moment like this."
