KaaS: Technical Expert Series: Secure Service Edge (SSE) explained with a hint of SASE

SD-WAN offers the ability optimize traffic at remote locations with path selection, path conditioning and WAN optimization while also providing firewalling for the location. SD-WAN intelligently and dynamically steers the traffic across the internet circuits and private-lines to provide optimize end user experience and bandwidth per-application.
SASE (Secure Access Service Edge) gives SD-WAN plus security in the cloud as part of a service you pay for rather than trying to implement your own wide scale security solution. With SASE, your attack surface is reduced and policy enforcement efforts are squeezed to single point while taking advantage of the cloud provider's massive pipes, redundancy, etc. It also means organizations don't need to deploy large expensive security appliances at every location - just a basic firewall to send the traffic to the cloud security provider where all the security services and layers are applied.
SSE provides all the cloud-based security services but removes the SD-WAN component. One of the challenges customers were finding with SASE was the massive amount of change and cost occurring all at once. They were rearchitecting the WAN and internet access and changing their security model all at the same time. As with any change, there is risk and complexity. The more change there is occurring at the same time then the risk and complexity increases exponentially. It made it very expensive since it usually means buying new security appliances for all those remote locations and subscribing to the new cloud security services.
