On 6 April, Slovakia voted for the second round of the presidential election. Voters had the choice between Peter Pellegrini, an ally of Prime Minister Robert Fico, and Ivan Korčok, an independent candidate with the support of the opposition.
The election result will impact Slovakia’s relationship with the European Union and the support to Ukraine, as Pellegrini follows Fico’s calls for peace with Russia. Rule of Law is also at stake in the election, as the winner will succeed the outgoing President Zuzana Čaputová, who in recent months has opposed decisions by Fico’s government to weaken the country’s Rule of Law.
Would President Pellegrini let Robert Fico increase his attacks against independent tribunals, public media and civil society? Would President Korcok be able to act as a counterpower to the Prime Minister, and how will the result of the election change Slovakia’s attitude toward the EU?
The results of the election were analysed, and their consequences for Slovakia and the EU.
