Emily Hirshorn, Associate Director of School Programs, shares some fun facts on her favorite artifact in the Middle East Galleries: spindle whorls.

These small weights with a hole in the middle were used to create string for textiles. Although we have more modern technologies to make string today, there are still a lot of contemporary fiber artists who prefer to still use the drop spindle.
