CASE OVERVIEW
March 14th, 2024. Westfield, New Jersey. 2:30 AM.
A white Nissan Rogue crashes into a parked vehicle with enough force to push it twenty feet into a utility pole.
Hours earlier, she had been at a nightclub. Earlier that same night, she had already been involved in another crash in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She had just paid to repair her vehicle.
Now she was facing multiple criminal charges — including aggravated assault on a police officer.
When officers arrived, Crystal refused repeated commands to sit down and remain in a safe area. She threatened to strike responding officers multiple times while standing in active traffic. Bodycam footage shows officers attempting de-escalation for several minutes before the situation turned physical.
During the arrest, Crystal struck an officer with her cellphone. She was taken to the ground and placed in handcuffs.
The crash investigation quickly shifted into a criminal case.

LEGAL OUTCOME
Crystal failed to appear for her initial court date, resulting in a bench warrant.
Six months later, she appeared in Union County Superior Court and pleaded guilty to aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and DUI. In exchange, resisting and obstruction charges were dismissed.
She was sentenced to:
Three years supervised probation
120 hours community service
Six-month driver’s license suspension
Mandatory substance abuse counseling
$5,000 fine
Both vehicles involved in the crash were totaled.
EDUCATIONAL BREAKDOWN
This case highlights how quickly a collision investigation can escalate when:
A driver refuses lawful commands
Impairment is suspected beyond alcohol alone
Physical resistance occurs during detention
Emotional instability interferes with officer safety
A breathalyzer under the legal alcohol limit does not eliminate DUI suspicion when drug impairment is involved. Officers rely on behavioral indicators, crash evidence, and toxicology analysis.
Body cameras documented every stage — from crash scene response to arrest, transport, and final processing.
