In 1938, Curtiss-Wright developed a fighter that was arguably ahead of its time. The CW-21 "Interceptor" was designed with one main goal: an incredible rate of climb to catch enemy bombers. Pilots who flew it, including members of the Flying Tigers, claimed it was faster and even more maneuverable than the legendary Mitsubishi A6M Zero.
Yet, the US military rejected the project. Instead, this lightweight fighter found its way to China and the Dutch East Indies, where it fought a desperate battle against overwhelming Japanese forces. This video covers the complete history of the CW-21, from its unique design and the myth behind the "Demon" nickname to its final days defending Java in 1942.
