6. SOUNDBITE (English) Cameron Smith, U.S. Olympic qualifier, Ski mountaineering:
"A good ski mountaineer has to be versatile. Because our race happens up the hill, you have to be an aerobic machine to be able to run up the mountain with all this gear attached to you. And you also need to be really precise with your movements to have really fast, efficient transitions. And then you also have to be a skilled, aggressive downhill racer to race back down the mountain.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Cameron Smith, U.S. Olympic qualifier, Ski mountaineering:
“So, the roots of ski mountaineering, or skimo for short, comes from backcountry skiing. So this is people going out and skiing in the mountains outside of the ski resort. They're making their own trail, climbing up the mountain, and then skiing back down, and doing it all human-powered, uphill and downhill.”

“You use specialized gear, lightweight boots and skis that give you flexible ankle articulation, and it lets your heel lift up. And you put these things called skins on the bottom of your skis that glide up the hill, but grip going backwards. So it gives you traction on the way up the mountain.”
