On January 25, 1978, the Juan March Foundation Assembly Hall hosted the Spanish premiere of Ionisation (1930) by Edgar Varèse, in charge of the Madrid Percussion Group, under the direction of José Luis Temes. On the eve of the fortieth anniversary of that concert, Percusiones del CSMA percussion group of the Aragon Conservatorio Superior de Música in Spain directed by the head of the Percussion CSMA chair César Peris, performs this emblematic work of the repertoire for percussion together with a set of pioneering works linked together by their resolute modern character.

Through groups such as the Pan American Association of Composers - of which Carlos Chávez was a determined promoter - composers from the American continent circulated their works (many of them for percussion) and gained international visibility. One of the greatest promoters of this common framework was Henry Cowell, a link that unites the generations of Charles Ives (of whom he was a student) and John Cage (who was his disciple). Pioneer of electronic music and new instrumental techniques (he is responsible for the massive use of clusters on the piano), he is the author of works for percussion such as Ostinato pianissimo, from 1934 (in which some have seen an avant-garde minimalism). la-let- tre) and Pulse (composed in 1939 and dedicated to John Cage).

As happened in the 1978 concert, the CSMA Percussion recital includes four premieres in Spain. Two of them (Suite for percussion instruments and Study in the form of a prelude and fugue) are the work of José Ardévol, a Cuban national from Barcelona who made important contributions to percussion music. The other two are due to Bill Russell, Cage and Cowell's partner.
