António Fragoso (1897–1918) was a Portuguese composer and pianist considered one of the most promising musical talents of his generation. He studied at the Lisbon Conservatory and began composing at a young age, gaining recognition for his lyrical piano and chamber works. After completing his studies, he returned to his hometown of Pocariça, determined to leave for Paris to study with the great masters of his time and further develop his artistic and creative voice. Tragically, he died at just 21 in the 1918 influenza pandemic that swept across Europe, leaving behind a small but remarkable body of work.
The Nocturne in D-flat major, completed in April 1917, was one of Fragoso’s last piano pieces and remains one of his most frequently performed works.
